ClassMetrics HR User Guide

Your whole class, on one iPad.

Students wear heart-rate straps and you see every student's effort live, color-coded by intensity. When class ends you have the evidence: time in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), per student and per class, ready to export.

01

What you need

ClassMetrics HR is a teaching tool. It is not a medical device and does not diagnose or monitor any health condition.

02

Getting around the app

Tap Menu in the top-left corner to move between sections. The menu slides over the current screen, and choosing a section closes it.

SectionWhat it's for
HomeStart class, today's classes, quick stats and recent sessions
ClassesRosters, attendance, behavior, testing, strap setup and history for each class
Live HRThe live heart-rate screen during class, and the Monitors screen for straps
TestingFitness tests such as the PACER, push-ups and curl-ups
ReportsSession history, charts and CSV exports
SettingsSubscription, sync, HR zones, attendance fields, display options and demo mode

During a live class the menu is hidden to give the students' tiles the whole screen. Tap Menu on the live screen to reach it.

03

Try it first with the demo workspace

The demo workspace has a sample class of 12 fictional students wearing simulated straps, so you can try every feature without any hardware. It's free and separate from your real classes.

  1. Open Settings → Demo Mode and turn on Use demo workspace.
  2. Close the app completely and reopen it. A green DEMO WORKSPACE bar at the bottom confirms you're in the demo.
  3. On Home, tap Start Live HR and watch the class come to life.

To go back to your own classes, turn Use demo workspace off and reopen the app. Demo data never mixes with your real data and never syncs.

04

Set up your classes

Create a class

Open Classes and tap + Class. Give it a name, such as "Period 3 · 6th Grade", and an optional description.

Add students

Open a class and choose Roster to add students one at a time. For each student you can enter:

Import a whole roster

In Classes, tap Import and choose a source:

The import preview shows new students, students already on file (these are updated rather than duplicated), and the classes they'll join, before anything is saved.

05

Connect and assign heart-rate straps

Each strap is assigned to a student within a class. Assignments are remembered, so you do this once per class, not every lesson.

Pair straps with students

  1. Put the straps on, or wet the electrodes and hold them. Straps only wake up when they sense skin contact.
  2. Go to Live HR and tap the antenna button (Devices), or open a class and choose HR Setup.
  3. The Heart Rate Monitors screen shows students on one side and nearby straps on the other. Tap a strap and choose its student.
  4. Tap the pencil next to a strap to rename it to match the number written on it, such as "Strap 7". This makes it easy to hand out the right strap next time.

Straps that are sending show a live bpm. A strap that's paired but silent tells you why, for example "No reading. Check the strap is on and wet".

How many straps can one iPad handle?

An iPad connects to each Bluetooth strap directly. Most iPads handle a typical PE class comfortably, but the limit depends on the iPad model and the room. Try your full class once before relying on it for a lesson. For very large classes, use a class receiver.

Class receivers (ANT+ straps and large classes)

A ClassMetrics class receiver is a small box that listens to every ANT+ heart-rate strap in the room and sends all the readings to your iPad over a single Bluetooth connection. Use one if:

To connect a receiver:

  1. Turn the receiver on and place it within a few meters of the iPad.
  2. Open Heart Rate Monitors and tap Class receivers (top-left).
  3. Tap Connect next to your receiver. Its status changes to Receiving class data and shows how many straps are streaming.
  4. Tap Done. Each strap now appears in the monitor list as ANT+ strap with its number, tagged via class receiver. Rename and assign them exactly like Bluetooth straps.

Some straps can send both ANT+ and Bluetooth. Assign each strap through one route only, receiver or direct, so its readings aren't counted twice.

06

Run a live class

Start

The live screen opens full screen, with one tile per student.

Reading the tiles

Each tile shows the student's name and photo or initials, the current reading in large type, their percentage of maximum heart rate, their average and maximum for the session, and their MVPA time with a progress bar toward the goal.

The tile color is the student's current zone:

ColorZone% of max heart rate
BlueZone 150–59%
GreenZone 260–69%
YellowZone 370–79%
OrangeZone 480–89%
RedZone 590–100%

A gray tile means the strap has stopped sending. It shows how long it's been silent, so you can check the strap. MVPA counts time at 70% of max heart rate and above (Zones 3–5). The goal marker on each bar is 50% of class time, a common PE benchmark.

Controls along the top

Tap a tile to change which strap that student is using. Long-press a tile to remove the student from this session.

End of class

Tap End → End Workout. The summary shows participants, duration, class average heart rate, average %HRmax and average MVPA, the class's time in each zone, and every student's results. Tap a student for their heart-rate graph and time in each zone. From here you can Export CSV, Discard the session, or tap Done to save it.

If the app is closed before you tap End, the session is kept but marked Not ended in your history.

07

Timers, intervals and music

Tap Timer on the live screen to plan the lesson as timed segments, such as Warm-up, Work and Cool-down. The segment bar shows progress through the lesson, with a large countdown for the current segment. Use Start timer, Skip and Back to control it. The class's last timer plan is remembered for next time.

08

Classes without straps: teacher observation

Observation sessions let you record effort by eye when there are no straps or not enough to go around. They're always free.

  1. Open the class and set Session mode to Teacher observation.
  2. Tap Start Class.
  3. Each student card has four buttons: Resting, Light, Moderate and Vigorous. Tap the level you see. The Whole class row sets everyone at once, and you can then adjust individuals.
  4. Undo reverses the last change. While paused, ratings can't be recorded.

Each rating is saved with the time it was made. The summary, Reports and CSV export show the observation history. Observation sessions don't produce heart-rate data or MVPA figures, and students who weren't rated stay unrated rather than being guessed.

09

Attendance and behavior

Attendance

Open a class and choose Attendance. Tap a student's name or photo to mark them present or absent. Mark Unmarked Present fills in everyone you haven't marked. Use the arrows to move between days, and Full Screen for a larger board.

Your own attendance fields: go to Fields on the attendance screen, or Settings → Attendance fields, and add yes/no fields such as Tardy or Dressed out. Tap a field on a student's card to cycle through not recorded, Yes and No. Hiding a field keeps its past records. Long-press a card to edit all of that student's fields at once.

Behavior

Choose Behavior in the class workspace to record daily behavior. In Settings → Behavior, pick the style that suits you:

10

Fitness testing

Open Testing to record fitness assessments for a class. Built-in tests:

Timed tests run full screen, with a large timer and each student's live heart rate. Results are saved per student, so you can track progress across the year.

11

Reports and exports

Reports has two views:

Tap the export button (top-right) to create CSV files:

CSV files open in Excel, Numbers and Google Sheets. Exported files are copies you control.

12

Show the class on a projector or TV

Connect the iPad to a projector or TV by cable, or with AirPlay from Control Center. During a live class the big screen shows a clean, full-screen board of every student's tile, while your iPad keeps the controls. Nothing you tap on the iPad appears on the projector. In observation sessions the board shows each student's current effort level.

13

Heart-rate zones and max heart rate

Maximum heart rate for each student is:

  1. the custom max HR on their profile, if you've entered one; otherwise
  2. 220 − age, from their date of birth, kept between 160 and 210; otherwise
  3. 200, if no date of birth is entered.

To change the zones, go to Settings → HR Zones. You can rename zones, change their ranges and colors, and add or remove zones. Ranges can't overlap.

14

Syncing between iPads

Using ClassMetrics HR without an account is fine. Everything stays on the iPad.

To keep the same classes on several iPads, sign in under Settings with Sign in with Apple or Google. Your classes, students, attendance, sessions and results sync through your account. Student photos and second-by-second heart-rate readings stay on each iPad and are not uploaded.
