Your health data stays on your phone.

What Basal reads, what it writes back, and the one thing that leaves the device.
The short version
Basal works out your calorie and macro targets and keeps correcting them against what you actually eat and weigh.
Your log and your health data live on your phone. The one thing that leaves is the text of a meal you type or dictate, which is sent to our parsing service to be turned into calories and macros. Nothing read from Apple Health is sent with it.
Apple Health
With your permission, Basal reads weight, height, steps, workouts, energy burned and heart rate, so the target reflects what you did rather than a textbook average. It writes back the calories and macros of meals you log, and any weight you enter.
Health data is never used for advertising, never sold, and never shared with anyone. It is read on the device, used by the calculations on the device, and stays there. It is not sent to our parsing service or to any AI provider.
You control every permission in the Health app, under Data Access & Devices. Turning one off stops Basal reading it; the app keeps working with less to go on.
What the app handles
- Meal descriptions you type or dictate. Sent to our parsing service and passed to the AI provider that converts them to macros. Nothing in the request identifies you.
- Your log, targets and history. On the device.
- Dictation. Handled by iOS, not by Basal.
There are no accounts and no sign-in. There is no analytics SDK, no advertising identifier and no third-party tracking.
What Basal is not
Basal is a tracker, not a clinician. Its numbers are estimates, including the adaptive ones, and they are not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. If you have a health condition that eating patterns affect, talk to a professional who knows your situation before acting on anything the app suggests.
Support and data questions: support@movemetric.org. Deleting the app removes your log; meals written to Apple Health are removed in the Health app.
